A former tutor, Droupadi Murmu has been elected the 15th President of India.
64-year-old Murmu will be the second woman president after Pratibha Patil.
The president-elect, from the minority Santhal tribe, was endorsed by over half of the parliamentarians and state legislators.
Born in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha, the politician started her career as a teacher before joining politics.
Murmu held ministerial positions and became Governor of Jharkhand in May 2015, the first woman to hold the position.
“As a tribal woman from remote Mayurbhanj district, I had not thought about becoming the candidate for the top post”, she said in early July.
Sanjay Srivastava, President of OFBJP West Africa, said the victory had brought about significant social change.
Srivastava expressed confidence that Murmu’s election would translate to the achievement of remarkable feats.
He said the new leader emerged at a historical moment India needs social justice and societal transformation.
“We are so excited over Droupadi Murmu’s victory, being the country’s second female president after Pratibha Patil.
“We hereby congratulate her and the entire India nation, we look forward to a progressive nation”, NAN quoted him saying.
