President Paul Biya of Cameroon has ordered an investigation be made into the stampede that killed eight people outside the Olembe stadium in Yaoundé the Nation’s capital.
The statement said the inquiry would shed light on the tragic incident.
The stampede occured when supporters were forcing their way into the stadium before the match between Cameroon and Comoros on Monday.
According to reports, more than 30 people were said to have been injured.
The venue was initially not meant to be full primarily due to Covid restrictions, but eyewitnesses said it appeared crowded.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), the organiser of the tournament, has also launched its own investigation on the matter.
Cameroon progressed to the quarter-finals beating 10 men Comoros side 2-1. Cameroon will then play The Gambia who beat Guinea 1-0.
