Akwa Ibom: Militants Reject Successor, Threaten Gov. Udom

‘Unyekisong Akwa Ibom’, a militant group has given the Governor of Akwa Ibom, Udom Emmanuel a one-month ultimatum to withdraw his endorsement of his preferred successor, Pastor Umo Eno.

Although in reports circulating online, the militants did not specifically indicate the consequences that will follow, they however said they will not fold their hands and watch the governor impose anyone on the state.

In a statement titled: ‘Unyekisong Ibom rejects Imposition of POS Governor’ by General Ekpo Ekpo, Commander Akan Bassey and Commander Sampson Umanah, the group declared that the people of Akwa Ibom must be allowed to elect their next governor.

‘Unyekisong Akwa Ibom’ rebuked the Governor for his recent endorsement of Pastor Umo Eno as his successor, stating that the action was a monstrous threat to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) family and the entire state.

The statement reads in part: “The Coalition of all Freedom Fighters and pressure group in Akwa Ibom state have been meeting for the past few days to review the current political situation in the state/endorsement of Pastor Umo Eno by Governor Udom Emmanuel as the next governor of Akwa Ibom.

“Unyekisong Akwa Ibom rejects and condemns the endorsement of Umo Eno as the next governor of Akwa Ibom State by Governor Udom Emmanuel and states strongly that it is unacceptable.

“The endorsement of Pastor Umo Eno is not only a threat to the PDP family but the entire state which will bring anarchy, insecurity and killings. The nomination of a particular candidate by the governor and leader of the party is unjust and unfair to other governorship aspirants in the state.

“After carefully studying the report submitted by credible sources, we have concluded that the endorsement of Pastor Umo Eno is not for the benefit of the state but would rather serve as a POS and commissioner to Mr Udom Emmanuel after leaving office to siphon money.

“We, therefore, give the Governor one-month ultimatum to withdraw his support for Pastor Umo Eno, go back to the drawing board and do proper consultations before making further statements concerning his successor, failure shall be disastrous as we will not fold our arms and watch his imposition unchallenged”.

They also called on political elites, traditional heads, elders, women, youths and the entire masses of Akwa Ibom to acquire their voter’s cards to enable them to fight any form of imposition in the 2023 election.
